RE:        Wildlife Nightclub Performance

In confirmation of our telephone conversation of February 21st, it is our opinion that the participation of live tigers, psittacine birds and pythons with nightclub performers in the setting that you described is not a health hazard. The animals, of course, should not have access to the food preparation area or the tables at which the clientele consumes food or drink.

As a public health measure, it may be prudent to ensure that the tigers are immunized with an inactivated feline rabies vaccine by a private veterinarian at the owner’s expense. In addition, psittacine birds (e.g., parrots, cockatoos, love birds, etc.) should have their stool examined for the presence of Chlamydia psittaci. Shedding of the organism, even if from an asymptomatic bird could be a health hazard due to respiratory transmission of the agent, although the risk is probably low due to distance from the audience. Usually transmission occurs when cleaning out a contaminated cage in a closed environment or through direct faecal contact. Isolation of the agent should nevertheless result in removal of the bird from public exhibition until treated and declared free of infection. Please see attached protocol for "Management of Psittacosis in Birds". The stool samples could be forwarded as described on pages 4 and 5 by a health inspector to the Central Reference Laboratory.

As described in Section 60(b) of the Food Premises Regulation, your Medical Officer of Health can give permission to the food premises operator to keep birds or animals on his premises.

In summary the animals and birds do not in our opinion constitute a health hazard to the clientele and, as described above, you may wish to consider additional precautionary preventive measures.

Please call the undersigned if you wish any further assistance.

Sincerely,
