The Head Veterinarian for the Metro Toronto Zoo says:

Dr. Kay G. Mehren
Scarborough, Ontario

To Whom It May Concern:

My concept of responsible pet ownership includes: provision of adequate care and attention to the physical and psychological needs of each animal in one’s possession; provision of a safe environment for the animal; and ensuring that the animal doesn’t roam freely or threaten the safety of other animals and people.  Based on these parameters, Mr. William (Bill) Frazer, who owns a variety of exotic animals including the Siberian tiger "Qadesh", is one of the most responsible pet owners I have met.

Mr. William Frazer has contacted me on several occasions when he required advice or help for one of his animals. Considering my feelings regarding exotic pets, my first contact with Bill Frazer and his tiger, Qadesh, was a pleasant surprise: Mr. Frazer is a concerned, knowledgeable, and competent animal person.  One has only to observe Qadesh in her traveling quarters or out for a leashed walk in a field to appreciate Mr. Frazer’s effective training and the trusting relationship which has been developed; this is a genuinely "happy" animal.  Qadesh has always been handled with gentleness, appropriate firm discipline, consistency, and thoughtful attention to her needs; she radiates gentle strength and confidence, and shows none of the behaviour patterns common to animals which are bored, mistreated, or frustrated.  Mr. Frazer provides her with a healthy and nutritionally balanced diet, and regularly presents her with new toys or activities to keep her mentally stimulated.

I have observed the show on several occasions in different venues during the past year, and am always impressed by the very professional handling of the animals.  Each animal entrance and exit is performed with amazing discretion - the audience isn’t aware of what is occurring - the animal simply appears and disappears.  Before Qadesh enters, Mr. Frazer talks about endangered species and describes the present plight of the world’s diminishing population of Siberian tigers.

I have confidence in Mr. Frazer’s ability to control his animals, and to provide an outstanding, entertaining, and safe show for his patrons. I only wish that all other captive animals, both exotic and domestic, could receive the same amount of care and respect as that lavished on his animals.

Sincerely,

Kay G. Mehren, B.V.Sc., D.V.M.

To whom it may concern,

I am a veterinarian who has cared for cats exclusively over the

past eight years.  I am an active member of the American Association

of Feline Practitioners and the Academy of Feline Medicine.

I have the privilege of caring for Qadesh whenever she is in Vancouver.

I first met her six years ago, as a cub, and initially felt concern for

Qadesh about the
       a. ethical "wrongness" of keeping a tiger as a captive "pet", and
       b. lack of dignity "using" a tiger in a "stage show".

Quickly I learned how prejudiced and narrow-minded my thoughts

had been.  Mr. Frazer is very knowledgeable, caring and competent.

Qadesh is not only sixth generation domesticated stock but also

extremely content, well cared for and respected as an equal.

Mr. Frazer is committed to her physical and mental health.  She is

better cared for, from a medical stand point, than most of my

smaller feline patients.  She is fed a properly balanced diet, exercised

and played with for hours at a time.  It is my professional opinion this

cat does not display any signs of stress or distress.  She is gentler than

many of the cats coming into my clinic and poses less of a risk to

myself and my staff.  She has also been trained to respect smaller

animals.

The relationship between Qadesh and Mr. Frazer is one of trust.  He

runs the ongoing risk of his friend being destroyed if any accident

were to happen.  He carries liability insurance to protect the public

and is fully capable of restraining her.  So, animal care, animal rights

and public safety are not the issues.

Animal rights.  In our human-dominated world we think nothing of

confining horses and cattle who should be free to roam; we farm

"wild animals" such as deer, buffalo and ostriches for meat and

profit; we pretend that millions of animals aren’t being used in

medical research to benefit mankind.  What hypocrites we are!!

If we were farming tigers for meat and money, we might not be

so concerned about Qadesh.

The human need to control and dominate other humans, other

creatures and this planet is based on our fear-based survival

instincts and has brought us to the environmental and extinction

tragedies and challenges we now face.

Mr. Frazer is very sensitive to these problems and talks about

endangered species at every show.  He supports anti-poaching

and wildlife organizations with the money he raises from the work

that he does with Qadesh.  As a veterinarian who devotes her life

to the well-being of animals, especially cats, I urge you to support

their efforts.

Yours sincerely,

Margaret Nixon D.V.M

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

AS ANIMAL CONTROL SUPERVISOR FOR THE CITY OF NEW

WESTMINSTER, B.C. I HAVE HAD 25 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN

ANIMAL WELFARE.

IN MY PERSONAL OPINION, THE FIVE AND A HALF YEAR OLD

FEMALE SIBERIAN TIGER, QADESH, BELONGING TO MR. BILL FRAZER,

IS BEING CARED FOR IN THE BEST POSSIBLE MANNER.

I ATTENDED A PERFORMANCE FEATURING QADESH. THERE

WAS NOTHING DONE THAT COULD CAUSE ANY HARM TO COME TO

THE TIGER.  I ALSO INSPECTED THE LIVING QUARTERS OF QADESH

AND SHE HAS FREE RUN OF A 53 FOOT RV TRAILER WITH ADEQUATE

FOOD AND WATER AT ALL TIMES.  SHE IS EXERCISED FREQUENTLY

DURING THE DAY.

I BELIEVE THAT THE TIGER’S PHYSICAL AND MENTAL

WELFARE COMES FIRST WITH MR. FRAZER.  I FEEL THAT QADESH

IS BEING CARED FOR BETTER THAN MOST DOMESTIC PETS.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

I, CORINNE MARINEAU, HAVE BEEN AN ANIMAL HEALTH

TECHNICIAN FOR 26 YEARS.  RECENTLY I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY

TO MEET MR. BILL FRAZER WHILE HE WAS IN NEW WESTMINSTER;

I ALSO MET QADESH, HIS FIVE AND A HALF YEAR OLD SIBERIAN

TIGER.  I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL

CONDITION OF QADESH.  SHE SEEMED VERY HAPPY AND HEALTHY

LIVING WITH MR. FRAZER.

QADESH HAS EXERCISE, EXCELLENT FOOD, AND A VERY

LOVING FAMILY WHO KEEP HER WELFARE THE FIRST PRIORITY.

I WISH I COULD SEE EVERY ANIMAL IN SUCH A GOOD

ENVIRONMENT, AND AS WELL CARED FOR IN EVERY WAY.
